Previously in Gdańsk Voivodeship from 1975 to 1998, Kartuzy has been the capital of Kartuzy County in Pomeranian Voivodeship since 1999.
The town is an important centre of culture of Kashubians.
Founded as a cloister for Carthusian monks, after whom it received its name.
